Middle School

The Middle School program at The American School in Stockholm (Grades 6-8) serves as a key transitional stage between the child-centered learning environment of Elementary School and the more subject-focused approach of High School.

Like Elementary School, Our Middle School curriculum also follows US Common Core Standards for English and Math, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for science, and AERO (American Education Reaches Out) standards for Social Studies. These globally recognized frameworks provide a structured yet flexible approach to learning, ensuring that students build essential knowledge and skills at each grade level while fostering their ability to think critically, solve problems, and communicate effectively.

Why the American Curriculum is Perfect for Middle School Students

The American Curriculum is designed to help students not only succeed academically but also grow socially and emotionally. Here’s why it’s a great fit for middle school learners:

  • Structured Learning Frameworks – The use of Common Core Standards for Math and English, NGSS for Science, and AERO for Social Studies provides clear learning goals for each subject. This ensures that students progress through a well-established pathway that supports academic success.
  • Focus on Critical Thinking & Problem Solving – At this stage, students are challenged to go beyond memorization and develop their ability to think critically and independently. Our curriculum encourages inquiry-based learning and problem-solving in all subject areas.
  • Balanced Development – Our holistic approach recognizes that Middle School students experience rapid changes. Our program supports the cognitive, emotional, and social growth of each student, helping them develop into responsible, well-rounded individuals.
  • Preparation for High School – Middle School at The American School in Stockholm prepares students for the more specialized and rigorous demands of High School, equipping them with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the future.

Middle School Curriculum Structure

Our curriculum continues to build on the solid foundation established in Elementary School, while introducing more subject-specific teaching, led by specialized teachers.

English Language Arts(ELA) – Our English program focuses on reading comprehension, writing skills, and verbal communication, with an emphasis on literary analysis, essay writing, and research skills.
Mathematics – We use the Eureka Math (Engage NY) curriculum to provide a rigorous math education, including topics such as algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Students will strengthen their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.
Science – Following the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), our science program encourages students to engage in hands-on experiments, projects, and critical thinking. Topics include life science, physical science, and Earth science.
Social Studies – The AERO standards guide our social studies curriculum, which covers history, geography, and current events. Students learn about different cultures, global systems, and become equipped to understand and address real-world issues.

Visual Arts – In addition to core subjects, students are encouraged to explore their creativity through visual arts, where they experiment with different mediums and techniques to express ideas and emotions.
Music – Students are introduced to music theory, composition, and performance. They explore different genres, learn about musical history, and develop their musical talents.
Physical Education (PE) – PE is integral to our curriculum, focusing on developing physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship, while encouraging healthy lifestyle habits.
Personal, Social, and Emotional (PSE) Learning – At this stage of development, PSE is an important part of the curriculum. Through structured lessons and advisory programs, we help students navigate the social and emotional challenges of adolescence.

Supporting Students’ Growth and Development

We understand that Middle School is a time of significant transition for students, both academically and personally. Our focus on healthy relationships between teachers and students, combined with our Teacher Advisor Program (TAP), ensures that every student has a supportive adult mentor who is invested in their personal and academic success. The Personal, Social, and Emotional (PSE) curriculum also plays a central role, helping students build strong character, resilience, and emotional intelligence.

By fostering leadership development, global awareness, and a love for learning, we ensure that our Middle School students are not only prepared for High School but also for becoming thoughtful, responsible citizens in the world.
