English Language Arts(ELA)

Our English program focuses on reading comprehension, writing skills, and verbal communication, with an emphasis on literary analysis, essay writing, and research skills.

In High School, English Language Arts is a cornerstone of the academic experience, equipping students with the essential tools for critical thinking, effective communication, and cultural awareness. At the American School in Stockholm, the ELA curriculum is both rigorous and enriching, designed to deepen students' understanding of language and literature while honing their analytical and creative writing abilities. Students engage with a diverse range of texts—from classic literature to contemporary works—across genres, cultures, and time periods. They learn to interpret themes, analyze characters, and explore literary techniques while developing their own voice in argumentative, narrative, and expository writing.

Classroom discussions encourage critical inquiry and thoughtful debate, helping students articulate their ideas clearly and confidently. Emphasis is also placed on vocabulary development, grammar, and research skills to ensure students are well-prepared for academic writing at the university level. Creative writing opportunities, such as poetry, short stories, and personal essays, nurture imagination and self-expression. Through projects, presentations, and collaborative assignments, students learn to think independently and express themselves with clarity and purpose.
